I’ve been reflecting on the end of World War Two and the immense emotional upheaval and devastation that people endured. The way they celebrated peace, despite everything, is so moving.
One moment that captures this beautifully is in an episode of The Crown, showing Londoners rejoicing in the streets. And, of course, there’s that iconic photograph of an American sailor spontaneously kissing a woman on VJ Day, a symbol of sheer relief and joy at the end of the war. This tea cosy design is inspired by those moments, celebrating the return to peace.
Now, if you’re familiar with the famous photograph, you’ll know the sailor is young, fit, and handsome. But in the crazy world of tea cosies, everyone is short and stout; just like the nursery rhyme says! The main cosy will depict the sailor in his blue uniform and cap, and in his arms will be the lovely dental assistant he kissed. She’ll be knitted as a separate piece and sewn into place.
The real challenge lies in creating the proportions. Since he’s not very tall in this design, but she’s a full-length figure, it’ll take some clever shaping to make it all come together naturally and look just right.
I’m so excited to bring this iconic image to life as a tea cosy. It’s always a thrill to transform such meaningful moments into fun, creative designs. I just hope I can do it justice!
