Nottingham's very own Robin Hood is going to feature on this tea cosy design; it was suggested to me from a lady in the TeaCosyFolk Facebook group. And I like a bit of history and I agreed with the lady that Robin Hood would be a lovely tea cosy.
Of course most of the images of Robin Hood are all old clechets, green tights, feather in his hat, bow and arrow to hand; even his statue in Nottingham looks a bit like that. I took my inspiration from old movies that were probably made in the 1950's or 60's when Robin Hood looked dapper. I think by the 80's when Michael Praed and Kevin Costner got hold of him, Robin of Loxley looked less dapper and more casual.
The Robin Hood tea cosy will have the teapot looking like a man, with his feathered hat, holding a bow and arrow. It would be nice to have his archery equipment as though he is going to fire an arrow, as he is in his statue, but knitting isn't good at long thin structure and they tend to end up as limp noodles. But we shall see.
I did notice that when I coloured my sketch in that Robin looked uncannily like an aggressive Christmas elf! I need to make sure when selecting the perfect shades of yarn that this isn't repeated in the knitting. It will be less Elf on the Shelf and more like Elf on the war path.
Oh his back I shall give him a quiver to hold his arrows and I thought I'd give him a pouch to fold the valuables that he takes from the rich. His tunics don't look like they have pockets.
I'm looking forward to this tea cosy. I love history and although this story is a legend, it is based in history. It's love to knit a heritage inspired design.
