I've designed a new Wren tea cosy to honour the Women's Royal Naval Service, inspired by their distinctive uniform and significant wartime contributions.
Having compiled all the suitable knitting patterns that TeaCosyFolk has for VE day, I can see that tea cosies of women and the their contributions to World War two is underrepresented, so I thought I'd address the imbalance with a new design of a WREN - Woman's Royal Navy.
At the end of last year I read a book by Tessa Dunlop called 'The Bletchley Girls'. What stood out to me is that one of the ladies being interviewed said that all the girls wanted to be WRENs because it had the best uniform. If you check out some of the other roles for young women during World War two you can see that they were right. The WREN's uniform was a navy blue skirt and jacket, a white blouse, black tie and black Royal Navy Cap hat. I think I would have rather worn a blue uniform too.
I have designed a sketch on a WREN saluting. I think it will be a nice tea cosy for the VE day collection of knitting patterns. So many women answered the call to help the war effort, with over 74,000 women serving in the Women's Royal Naval Service.
I'm looking forward to creating this tea cosy, I just love their hairstyles. I read somewhere that they lowered the line of the curls in their hair so that you could see the curls below their hats.
I think the hat will be the trickiest part of the tea cosy. I have coloured it in Blue but I have since found out they were Black. It's so hard to distinguish from black and white photos.
