Wasn't it exciting, as a kid, to hear the chimes of the ice cream van on its way up the street?
Whether you called him the Ice cream Man, Mr Whippy, the oakey bloke, the hokey pokey man or the ice-cream seller, those chimes signalled his arrival on hot and sunny afternoons. It didn't seem to matter what tune the chimes played, an ice cream van and its twinkly jingle was unmistakeable.
My new tea cosy design is based on that childhood memory of the ice cream van. The main cosy is the van and I shall knit it in Stylecraft Special DK Fondant and Lemon, they really feel like ice-cream colours. Probably because they remind me of Neapolitan ice cream.
Inside the van, I want to make a little recess for the ice cream seller. They always offered sauces and crushed nuts. My ice cream seller will just be waiting at the window to take your order.
Do you remember that the ice cream van always used to have a sign on the back - 'Mind that Child', warning other motorists, and they used to have a model of an ice cream on the front, just in case anyone was mistaken as to what was being sold. I shall be including the huge ice cream at the front.
I'm really looking forward to the summer months and visits to the ice cream van, so I'm looking forward to this cosy. There are some tricky bits with the recess and trying to make a pudding-looking cosy look more like a van, but I'm up for the challenge. I think the ice cream seller might be tricky too, only because mini sized can be fiddle and you can't get the detail on. But I shall see how I get on.
