I love to watch David Attenborough programs that introduce us to all the animals, and this has inspired me to create a Galapagos giant tortoise. I love these giant prehistoric creatures because they look so cumbersome and awkward, and they have such great personalities.
In terms of teapots, the Galapagos giant tortoise is the tortoise that best suits a tea cosy transformation, because when the giant tortoise is stood on his legs, it's the right sort of shape. So my tortoise will be stood. I thought I'd have him stood in a green landscape that will make a lovely contrast with him and his colourings.
Now I know my tortoise isn't coloured in the right colours, but my selection of pencils isn't the greatest. And my brown turned out to be a rather readdy brown. But working from the Stylecraft pallet I shall find more suitable shades.
I really want to get the shell to look right, Afterall this is the crowning glory of any tortoise. I don't wat the shell to look caricature. The shapes are actually hump like, more like a undulating landscape and I want to capture that.
I love the little legs too. They have funny knees that seem to stick out in an awkward way that make this already old looking creature look as if he has got knee joint issues like a human OAP. And those toenails! I don't think we think of tortoises as having toenails or any features on their feet.
I'm looking forward to this creation. I want to knit as much in as I go, I like to do this so that it limits sewing up (the less enjoyable aspect of knitting but a necessary process). There may also be structural issues with the head. It's quiet a big and heavy thing to be help upright, but I'll see how we get on.
