Rowan Yarn sent me a couple of balls of Rowan Felted Tweed DK to design a tea cosy with. A hedgehog tea cosy sprang to mind, a cute hibernating hedgehog tea cosy.
I think most people in autumn feel like hibernating, so this is a tea cosy that we probably all identify with.
I love the photos you see at autumn of hedgehogs curled up into a ball and sleeping, they look so cute and cosy, and this is image along with the wonderful yarn that inspired my tea cosy design.
The yarn, Rowan Felted Tweed, is a lovely yarn that feels very natural. Being made up of 50% Wool, 25% Viscose and 25% Alpaca it's not hard to see why it feel like a natural fibre. It's soft and a bit wispy. The colour isn't a flat colour, it's a mix of colours as though stray fibres got caught up in it in the spinning process. It gives you the feeling that it was spun by hand by an aging woman on a Scottish island somewhere, instead of being manufactured in Italy.
I thought I'd design a tea cosy for a mini sized teapot. Partly because I don't know how far the yarn will go, but also because mini sized is cute and I want my hedgehog to be super cute to reflect the adorability of hedgehogs.
As we all know, hedgehogs are all spikey and to represent this on the main cosy I want to create a surface that reminds us of the prickly spines of the hedgehog's defence system, so I thought I would create a bobbly texture.
The hedgehog's face will be at the top of the tea cosy, as if he is curled up in a ball and hibernating, They look so cute with their paws near their faces, so I want to include the front paws too.
I'm looking forward to working on this tea cosy and trying out the new yarn. It's always lovely to have new toys to play with.
