Following on with the London theme with the Big Ben wine bottle cover, I have been asked if I would make a London Phone Box wine bottle cover. I thought this was a fabulous idea for such an icon as the public telephone box.
Of course the telephone boxes are tall, and red, so a wine bottle is half way there. My main problem is all the windows. There are 6 rows of windows, with 3 in each row, that's a lot of little squares and I don't want to have to knit them all individually and sew them on, crikey, that would take an age. So what I am thinking is to knit them in, but I know a lot of knitters are put off when they see intarsia or Fair Isle in a pattern, so I shall try something different that gives the same effect, but only works with one colour yarn at a time.
As I did with the Big Ben cover, I would like to make the top removable so that the main cosy can stay on the bottle, whilst the top is removed for pouring. Previously I was able to knit the spire part of the tower and it hugged the bottle top, but in this case, it wont work that way so I shall have to do a bit of engineering to make the top stay in place on the top of the bottle.
I'm really looking forward to making this wine bottle cosy. I love our nation's little treasures and icons and the phone box is something we all instantly recognise even though these days their use is in decline. I love they they are bright and colourful and look so simple, but I do think it will create some issues as I begin to knit it. But that's all part of the fun!
