Terry’s Chocolate Orange cosies seem to have become a tradition at TeaCosyFolk, but this year we have moved away from individual Christmas theme cosies to something that is more traditional.
What is amazing about knitted nativity scenes is that they quickly become a treasured Christmas tradition. I remember knitting one 30 years ago and we still use it every Christmas. Not only do we use it, but my children look forward to seeing it each year because it reminds them of by gone Christmases and their childhoods. So I thought it would be really lovely to create a Terry’s Chocolate Orange nativity, whether you keep the character yourself and get them out each year, or maybe you gift them and then everyone brings the scene together at Christmas, I think the cosies would make a wonderful Christmas feature. I do like the idea that you set the scene up over Christmas on the Terry’s Chocolate Oranges and then maybe New Years day, it's chocolate orange munching day!
So my scene will include the full accompaniment of nativity goers. I have only sketched a selection of the figures but I will knit everyone; Mary and Joseph, and of course baby Jesus. I like the idea of Mary holding the baby. Then a Shepherd with a sheep. The three wise men and Angel Gabriel.
With my own nativity scene, I have sheep and in more recent years I have added a camel. But what I'd really love is a donkey. The little donkey that Mary rode to Bethlehem on. So in my collection I shall definitely have a Chocolate Orange donkey cosy.
I thought that I wanted the cosies to look respectfully serious and not whimsical or cartoony. So they have bodies on top of the main part of the cosies and not just heads. I think it will look nicer than a fat collection of people and it gives the figures height and more prominence for the display. I think it also means that they can easily hold things.
I do love a bit of Christianity at Christmas so I am really looking forward to designing the set, I'm just a bit daunted about the amount of characters and Terry’s Chocolate Oranges I will need to buy and eat in the designing process.
I don't foresee any issues, and I shall make help videos for any trickier bits in the pattern.
