The Greek God Zeus with thunderbolts was a request from a lady in the Facebook help group who really, really wanted a Zeus tea cosy. It's taken me a while to get there, but I am now happy to oblige and design a tea cosy knitting pattern of the King of the Gods, and the God of the skies and thunder.
Because he is god of the skies and thunder, I thought just holding thunderbolts probably wasn't enough to make him look godly. So I thought I'd have him stood on a cloud.
A lot of pictures of Zeus have him depicted as topless, but I thought for proprieties sake at teatimes that we'd have him wrapped in a toga. But then I thought it would be a lot of white if the cloud were white and the toga was white, you wouldn't know where one ended and the other began. But logically if there is thunder and lightning, the cloud is probably a big angry grey cloud.
I think popular opinion has it that Zeus is a bearded man, and quite a wild and long haired bearded man at that; not unlike Father Christmas. I have given him big hair and a big bearded which echo's the cloud.
In his hand is a thunderbolt. I think that this is probably going to be the trickiest of all the build. It's quite small and angular, and it doesn't want to look like he's just holding a yellow stick. I shall have to get my thinking cap on for this one.
For the cloud I thought I'd use bubble stitch. It gives a nice billowy texture. It's a bit hair raising because you have to drop a stitch, but it is fun to knit in more unusual stitches. I used it on another tea cosy design for a Unicorn on a cloud and a sheep tea cosy, there is a Youtube help video for the stitch here...
