This summer, I visited a National Garden Scheme open garden and was enchanted by a fir tree adorned with purple pine cones.
The vibrant purple colour of the pine cones was astonishing, showcasing nature's incredible ability to create beauty from the simplest things. It was a Korean Fir, and I soon discovered that firs can have purple, blue, and even pink pine cones; not just the common brown ones we see in the UK countryside.
This garden visit, along with the fabulous Yarnalia Wonder DK yarn, has inspired my latest project. Wonder DK is a lovely, soft, double knitting weight yarn made of 30% wool and 70% acrylic, feeling wonderfully natural like 100% fibre. I adore the 'Snow' shade, which isn't an artificial white, perfect for a wintery fir tree. I'll pair it with Sweet Cherry Breeze Wonder DK for the pine cones, creating a look that might resemble a Spanish Fir. A snowy fir tree with pink pine cones will be pretty and festive, and with its high wool content, the tea cosy will keep the teapot hot even on the coldest days.
I often receive requests for mini-sized tea cosy patterns at Christmas, as they make lovely seasonal gifts when paired with a mini teapot for one.
I wanted to avoid a simple cone shape and instead create a textured surface, imagining large, candlewick bedspread-like tufts. I think a series of projections will look like the tips of branches, giving the jagged edge that we associate with fir and spruce trees. Stay tuned if you want to knit yourself a fir tree tea cosy this Christmas!
