RNLI Crew Member Tea Cosy

The RNLI Crew Member tea cosy was designed for the Simply Knitting Magazine issue 256 which goes on sale on the 3rd October 2024.

2024 celebrates the 200th anniversary of the RNLI and after all that time of saving lives, they deserve a good and hot cup of tea, so I designed an RNLI tea cosy to celebrate this amazing milestone.

Having visited our local RNLI, I found that yellow wellingtons were an important emblem to the institution, because in all the 200 years of service the yellow wellingtons were the only part of the uniform that hadn't changed. So I knit my crew member had to wear yellow wellies.

The tea cosy has the crew member in a sitting position with a life ring in his hands, resting on his wellies. He is wearing a white helmet to protect his head and the visor of the helmet is made from a section of plastic from a clean fizzy pop bottle.

He's knitted in Stylecraft Special DK throughout and the Sunshine shade is perfect for the brightly coloured yellow uniform.

I hope this tea cosy serves as a fitting tribute to The Royal National Lifeboat Institution and their amazing teams that save lives at sea. Thank you so much for your hard work and bravery.
