True Colours Peacock Cushion Knitting Pattern

The True Colours Peacock Cushion was designed for the Simply Knitting Magazine issue 181 which went on sale on the 21st of December 2018.

I was asked to design a cushion with a peacock theme. We love visiting National Trust stately homes, and this style was my inspiration for the True Colours Peacock Cushion. In the old manor houses you often see tapestries and soft furnishings in beautiful rich colours, and peacocks are a recurring feature; probably because they are such a majestic and colourful bird.

Peacocks are often designed to be looking forwards and I wanted to break from convention. If I were a peacock, I'd be admiring my tail - and this is how the pose of the bird came about.

I didn't want the reverse of the cushion to be plain, that would have been quite boring to knit, so I used the splendid contrasting colours to create a striped design on the back.

The cushion is edged with giant pom pom edging again in a rich, royal blue. Back in National Trust houses, everything seems to be overdone, and embellished; and I wanted this look for the cushion, plus pompoms are just so charming!

There is an envelope opening at the back to get the cushion cover off the cushion insert easily for washing. The envelope is held closed by pompoms instead of the traditional button, just a cute little quirk.

The peacock cushion fits a 46cm square cushion insert, so its a good sized cushion, prefect for a soft furnishing feature piece.
