Shetland Sheep Cushion Knitting Pattern

I designed a Shetland Sheep Cushion after designing the Highland Fling Heilan Coo Cushion for Simply Knitting. After the cow cushion had featured in the magazine, I had a few requests for a sheep cushion to accompany the cow and make a set.

I researched breeds of sheep to decide which I wanted to make. I knew it had to be a very woolly one to fit the loopy stitch pattern, and I new I wanted to give the sheep big curly horns, because I love sheep with big horns, they look amazing. Surprisingly the sheep bree that fitted the bill was a Shetland Sheep. The perfect companion to a Highland cow I thought.

The main body of the cushion is knitted with two patterns combined together to give a loopy fan stitch. Farm animals are not neat and tidy and I wanted to reflect this in the stitch.

The Sheeps head is is knitting in plain stocking stitch and two brown football shank buttons are used for eyes. The horns are large and curled with the growth ring rows at intamissions along the horn.

The bottom of the cushion is held closed with three large wooden buttons. The Cow cushion cover fits a 15 inch or 38cm square cushion insert.

The two cushions make a great pair. Both sheep and cow are included in the same knitting pattern.
