Description

To commemorate D-day this year I was asked if I would design an infantry tank tea cosy. The D-day landings are remembered on the 6th of June and mark the day of the Normandy landing and the start of the liberation of France and Western Europe. I was asked to base my design on the Churchill Mark IV.

The main body of the tank is the actual tea cosy and the other tank parts are knitted and sewn on. The hull is split in two, so that the tank can straddle the spout and handle openings.

The bogies or wheels that move the tracks along are knitted as bobbles and you knit that panel. There is a help video for the bobbles on Youtube that is included in the knitting pattern.

The gun on the tank uses a 4mm bamboo knitting needle to support it, but you could use bamboo skewers of a piece of doweling. I find that a cheap supply of bamboo knitting needles for such uses can be found in charity shops.

An army marches on it's stomach or sometimes it's teapot.

This Tea Cosy:

  • is made from double thickness yarn for extra insulation
  • fits a medium sized teapot that holds 6 to 8 cups or 2 pints

What you will need to make the pattern

5.5 mm, UK size 5 or US size 9 knitting needles,
4.00 mm, UK size 8 or US size 6 Knitting needles,

139g Stylecraft Special DK Khaki,
