Description

Steeped in history and tradition, this tea cosy of Black Rod is a tribute to British democracy. This tea cosy celebrates the Opening of Parliament.

The tea cosy is dressed in period style; Black Rod dates back to King Edward III in the 1350's, which accounts for the frills at the collar and cuffs. The tea cosy also is dressed in a black military-style coat and shoes with buckles at the front.

The hair is grey and gathered at the back and tied to keep it tidy.

Being the senior officer in the House of Lords, and having such an important role, I imagined the Usher of the Black Rod to be posh and maybe a little bit snooty and I thought it would be fun to give them a turned up nose. It gives the air of authority.

Black Rod is wearing black gloves and is carrying the Black Rod with which he hammers the door. With the added role of Sergeant at Arms, and charged with keeping the house orderly, Black Rod also wears a sword in a scabbard.

I love history and tradition, and it's wonderful to have created this detail character with all the symbolism and heritage. It's the perfect tea cosy for keeping order in a house where they like to have political heated debates.

It just takes a fresh brew to lead the Commons to the Lords.
