Animated Tea Cosy

Description

I was inspired by the international meeting for COP26 that is being held in Glasgow this year to make a tea cosy based around climate change. I created knitted images and symbols of some of the issues of climate change to decorate the tea cosy.

The main part of the tea cosy illustrates the rising sea levels or floods. Notice that there is more water on the tea cosy than the green land at the top.

The top of the tea cosy has two big industrial chimneys pumping out thick grey smoke and causing pollution. There is a thermometer on the side of the cosy, illustrating rising temperatures.

But I didn't want it to be a cosy of doom, so there are also symbols of the way forward. A wind turbine, a solar panel and the recycling symbol, as well as a tree.

The yellow canary is there as a warning and a symbol of the air quality. Canary's are being crafted and sent to MP's as craftivist gifts to ask MP's to do more to push the changes needed to halt climate change and to put it into reverse.

It's a political tea cosy but also a caring tea cosy. Climate change and global warming is going to effect everyone. But if every day we can boil the kettle one less time because we are using a tea cosy to keep the teapot and the second cup of tea hot, then we are helping to use a bit less energy. I know it doesn't sound like a lot, but lots of little things done by lots of people adds up to much more.

Teapot warming not Global warming!

This Tea Cosy:

  • is made from double thickness yarn for extra insulation
  • fits a medium sized teapot that holds 6 to 8 cups or 2 pints
